Glaucoma

Glaucoma occurs when the nerve fibres in the retina, which are responsible for carrying important visual information to the optic nerve and into the brain, are killed off and our vision is affected. It is estimated that 50% of the people in Ireland who have glaucoma are not aware that they have the condition. Early detection of glaucoma is vital as further damage to the eye can be prevented by early intervention. By having regular eye tests with your optician any changes in the eye can be detected early. Visual field damage can not be reversed but any further damage can be prevented.
